Praful Patel

Praful is a Ugandan national, born in Kenya in 1946. Former Vice President at the World Bank – In his 35-year career at the World Bank, he provided strategic leadership in managerial and corporate positions in various parts of the Bank taking forward the institution’s mission of poverty alleviation in regions as varied as Africa, East Asia, Latin America and Northern Africa and the Middle East. He has effectively led the World Bank Group’s efforts to develop country teams, and played a primary role in developing and implementing the Africa Capacity Building Program. Besides leading the WB teams on PACT and TICAD, he was closely associated with ACBF in its formative years and served as a member of its Executive Board and as Alternate Governor. After serving as Vice President for South Asia in his final five years he retired from the World Bank in August 2008 and continues to be based in Washington DC, consulting as a Development Specialist. He serves on several boards including the African Center for Economic Transformation, Catalyst Microfinance International, ASA International and IMAGO. He currently also serves as Chair of the Appeal Board of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and as Senior Adviser to the Raila Odinga Foundation.
